CWP Global joins Green Hydrogen Project Consortium in Angola

CWP Global, Sonangol, GAUFF Engineering and Conjuncta reached an agreement on 2 October 2024 at the Angola Oil & Gas Conference in Luanda, under which CWP Global will join the existing consortium of three partners who have been developing a green hydrogen production project in Angola since 2021. The project is designed to utilise capacities of the existing hydropower plant in Lauca to produce green hydrogen and its derivatives. The planned electrolysis capacity is reaching up to 600 MW and, according to the current schedule, it will be the first project in sub-Saharan Africa that can start exporting green hydrogen to Europe.

‘With the signature of this agreement, the consortium reaches another key milestone by partnering with CWP, a major international player in the hydrogen sector that brings its extensive expertise to this multidisciplinary team,’ emphasised Stefan Tavares Bollow, Managing Director of GAUFF Engineering.

CWP Global is one of the world's leading developers of large-scale renewable hydrogen plants and currently has eight green hydrogen projects in its portfolio in Africa, Australia, South America and North America.

There are currently plans to synthesise the green hydrogen that is produced with nitrogen to make green ammonia. Green ammonia can be used in a variety of ways in industry and contribute to its decarbonisation, e.g. as a fuel for international shipping, for the production of green fertiliser or to act as a transport medium to convert it back into hydrogen.

In the first phase of the project, up to 400,000 tonnes of ammonia are to be generated per year. The capacity can then be increased in future phases. The involvement and utilisation of existing power generating, port and grid infrastructures will ensure the comparatively fast implementation of the project. This will enable Angola to position itself as an important supplier of green ammonia in the international market before the end of the decade.

In the global effort to upscale the production of green hydrogen, this project not only accelerates the clean energy transition, but also establishes Angola as a new hub for sustainable industrialisation on the African continent. In coordination with the now four consortium partners and the competent Angolan authorities, the project is in line with Angola's own development aspirations, including the long-term development strategy ‘Angola Vision 2050’ and the current national development plan (2023-2027).
