Commissioning of the restructured extinguishing water supply in ZDF’s broadcasting center 1

In June 2018, after less than one and a half year of construction period at the ZDF broadcasting center 1, located on the “Lerchenberg” in Mainz, the new extinguishing water lines were put into operation right on schedule. The refurbishment of the extinguishing network, which is partly over 30 years old, has been planned by the work group GAUFF GmbH & Co. Engineering KG / Werner Hartwich GMBH by order of the ZDF (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen - Second German Television).

Furthermore, all required services concerning the professional support of the execution of construction works were rendered through the work group. The ZDF broadcasting center 1 includes a high-rise building, an editorial building, a broadcasting operations building (a rotunda), the logistics center and the associated vehicle fleet as well as an open area, in which TV shows like “ZDF Fernsehgarten” are produced.

First of all, a master plan for the refurbishment of the extinguishing water supply has been elaborated during the pre-planning phase. After completion of the execution planning and based on it, the construction works were tendered and contracted at the beginning of the year 2017.

The whole extinguishing water and sprinkler lines in the existing supply ducts were replaced on a total length of approx. 2.140 m. The 3.800-meter long extinguishing water network has been completely regenerated in the outside area of the broadcasting center. The fact that the supply of extinguishing water of the broadcasting center still had to be ensured, even during the building refurbishment, has been a particular challenge.

The site management and the local construction monitoring of the work group took place in close cooperation with the client and the construction companies. Therefore, all set time and cost framework have been met in a reliable manner.
