Framework contract for Water Supply Project in Iraq

Al-Samawa, the capital of the Iraqi Province Al-Muthana, is located between Bagdad and Basra and is divided in one western and one eastern half by the river Euphrates. Despite being situated on the shores of the river, there is not enough clean drinking water for the population and the industries that are settled in the town.

In order to provide drinking water to the constant increasing population of the capital of the province, as well as in its catchment area of the province of Al Muthana (a total of 250.000 persons), new alternatives to the existing water infrastructure have to be created urgently. Therefore and among others, a water pipeline of 63 km length and consisting of ductile cast iron respectively iron pipes has to be constructed and financed, the pipeline running from de city of Diwaniyya in direction of Al-Samawa. For the implementation of this very important and challenging project, the Ministry of Water Resources in Iraq has concluded a framework contract with GAUFF Engineering.

In this framework agreement, duly signed on March 14th, 2018, the Ministry awards GAUFF Engineering with the technical responsibility as well as the responsibility for the implementation of the project “Al-Samawa Grand Water Supply”.

The framework contract includes three project stages:

  • Stage 1: Preparatory Consultancy Services for the Technical and Project Implementation Assistance (TPIA) for the Al-Samawa Water Supply Project
  • Stage 2: Engineering and Project Management Services
  • Stage 3: Procurement Services for Supplies and Works

In Stage 1, GAUFF Engineering’s experts will review the implementation planning that has already been elaborated from the “Center of Studies and Engineering Designs” of the Ministry of Water Resources, and optimize it according to the latest requirements. In addition, the training of the future Management as well as Technical Staff of the Provider will be started in accordance to the current international standards.

In Stage 2, the preparation and assessment of the tender documents and the supervision of all preparatory construction measures, such as topographical and geotechnical investigation of the site, will follow.

Stage 3 includes the Procurement Services of all supplies and works needed for a successful implementation and put into operation of the project.

The order volume for all three stages amounts to 250 Million Euros and includes the fees for the export credit guarantees.

In the mid-nineties, GAUFF Engineering has already worked on a water supply project in Iraq, at that time the project was conducted by the United Nations under the umbrella of the “Oil for food” program. And now, with this duly signed framework contract, GAUFF Engineering has received its first commercial mission in Iraq for a completely new water supply system.
