Memorandum of Understanding - 150 villages in Niger are to be electrified using photovoltaics

On June 2nd, 2022, the Nigerien Energy Minister H.E. Ibrahim Yacouba and GAUFF Engineering Managing Director Stefan Tavares Bollow signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the planning, construction and financing of photovoltaic systems for the electrification of 150 villages in Niger. This project represents an important contribution to Niger's strategy to electrify rural regions in a sustainable and resource-saving manner.

The MoU for the project with a total order value of around EUR 50 million was signed at the 15th German-African Energy Forum in Hamburg. Euler-Hermes will probably secure the project and KfW IPEX Bank is interested in financing this project depending on a commitment from Euler Hermes. The German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) should also be involved in the project and support the training of local technicians.

A comparable project for a total of 300 villages is already being implemented by GAUFF Engineering in Senegal.

In the next few months, the project contract is to be finalized and financing secured. The first work could then begin as early as 2023.
