Progress on the expansion of freight staging areas at Munich Airport: Detailed design completed and construction contract awarded
Another milestone has been reached in the “Expansion of Freight Staging Areas” project at Munich Airport: the detailed design phase has been successfully completed and the construction works have been awarded. The contract was assigned to the bidding consortium consisting of Richard Schulz Tiefbau GmbH & Co. KG and Kurt Motz Bau GmbH. Start of construction is scheduled to be in April 2026.
GAUFF Engineering is performing the general planning for this technically challenging project. The scope of services includes the design of civil engineering structures, transport facilities and the technical equipment for high-voltage systems.
In the southern cargo area of the airport, a new freight staging area covering approximately 15,000 m² of aspheric surface is being constructed in a section that was previously partially unpaved. In addition to the expansion of the area, the project includes, amongst other things, the planning of sewage systems, energy and lighting infrastructure, empty conduit routes for operational systems, as well as road markings and signage. As part of the planning process, the existing transport infrastructure was also adapted to the new concept for the area.
The implementation will take place whilst flight operations continue, which imposes special requirements on planning and construction processes. The project partners are act-technik GmbH and Richter Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH.
The project has been underway since September 2025. Construction works are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.
