Training for OMVG on the topic hydropower in Nuremberg

As the representative of the client OMVG (Organisation pour la Mise en Valeur du fleuve Gambie), GAUFF Engineering has been in charge of their energy project since 2015, in which 1,677 km of 225 KV high-voltage lines, 15 transformer stations and two distribution centers as well as the Sambangalou hydroelectric power station are being built.

The high-voltage line and the associated low-voltage supply networks supply the four OMVG member states Senegal, Gambia, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau via a power ring (interconnector). 30% of the electrical energy will come from the existing Kaléta hydroelectric power station in Guinea and the new 120 MW Sambangalou hydroelectric power station in Senegal. The Sambangalou hydroelectric power station is being designed and built by a Franco-German consortium, SAMVA.

As part of their contract, GAUFF Engineering also trains experts and executives from OMVG. Various blocks of knowledge are imparted in a training and professional development program that builds on one another. The core topics of the four training units are:

  1. Hydropower
  2. Project and risk management
  3. Executive Leadership
  4. Design and construction as well as maintenance of high-voltage power grids

The first training course on hydropower took place from August 8th to 12th, 2022 in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Twelve experts from OMVG were able to deepen their knowledge during the theoretical part of the training in Nuremberg. In the practical part, run-of-river hydroelectric power plants and barrages of the Waterways and Shipping Office MDK Bamberg were visited in Bamberg. In Ravensburg, the participants also obtained information in the workshops of ANDRITZ Hydro GmbH, the German partner of the SAMVA consortium.

The subsequent training blocks are currently being prepared and are scheduled to take place in autumn 2022 and spring 2023.
