Water supply Ulaanbaatar – phase 3

Contract: Systematic further development and continuation of the feasibility study made in 2011 concerning the utilisation of ground water in the urban area of Ulaanbaatar, combined with the education and training of employees of the city of Ulaanbaatar.

Background & Project:

As the capital of Mongolia, the city of Ulaanbaatar is the centre of economy and administration. The fast growing population, the booming economy and the associated increasing demand for water meet with short water resources, due to the arid climate. In many districts of the million-strong city the ground water level has fallen considerably over the past two decades. The ground water in large parts of the project area is furthermore contaminated with toxic substances and bacteria.

In connection with the existing master plan for the development of the city of Ulaanbaatar, GAUFF Engineering conducted a feasibility study in 2011 concerning the utilisation of ground water in the central and eastern parts of the urban area of Ulaanbaatar (project phase 1+2). On the basis of these results, GAUFF was entrusted with the continuation and further development of the feasibility study. The remaining parts of the city will be analysed during the current project phase 3. The ground water database created by GAUFF will be expanded systematically, so as to have an appropriate basis for planning, following completion of the project, for the whole area of the million-strong city. Gauff will furthermore provide education and training activities relevant for technical employees, engineers and the management of the city of Ulaanbaatar.
