• Road refurbishment in Angola: "Sumbe – Quibala"

Client: Instituto de Estradas de Angola (INEA)
Project location: Angola, province of Kwanza Sul
    Project term: Four years
    Project start: 2006

Contract:

Expansion of the Sumbe – Quibala road - EPPM – Engineering, Procurement, Project Management

Background

Merely ten percent of the around 56,000 kilometers of road in Angola are surfaced. As a result of the civil war (1975 - 2002), almost all surfaced roads and around 75% of non-surfaced roads are damaged or can no longer be used, and around two thirds of all bridges were destroyed during that time. Travel remains difficult, especially trips inland. With the help of a comprehensive refurbishment and construction plan, Angola's government commissioned around 5,300 kilometres of road to be built between 2002 and the end of 2008. By 2011, this figure is to total 14,000 kilometers. The INEA, "Instituto Nacional de Estradas de Angola", is responsible for planning transport in Angola.

Project

The 155-kilometer long road in the province of Kwanza Sul links the cities of Sumbe, Gabela and Quibala. Beginning in Sumbe, the provincial capital of Kwanza Sul on the Atlantic coast, the road travels across the slowly rising arable coastal plain, rising then from kilometer 50 to kilometer 70 through the tropical rain forest to around 1,000 meters. The second stretch from Gabela to Quibala first rises to around 1,400 meters and continues on until Quibala with only minor changes in altitude.

The road surface of what was once a well-designed, well-built permanent road with a blacktop was completely destroyed, but it was possible to integrate it into the new base courses.
