The city of Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia and also the centre of economy and administration. The fast growing population, the booming economy and the associated increasing demand for water meet with the short water resources, due to the very dry climate. In many quarters of the million-strong city the ground water level has decreased considerably in the last 20 years. In other places ground near strata water leaks to the surface and results in glaciation during the long and cold winters.
In connection with the existing master plan for the development of the city of Ulaanbaatar, GAUFF Engineering was charged with the elaboration of a feasibility study for the future utilisation of ground water.
Beside the utilisation of ground water as tap water while working on the project, there was also focus on the topic of flood protection and the river training of the Selbe river. The objective was, to submit specific suggestions for building measures in the area of water management to the authorities of the city of Ulaanbaatar. In this connection recommendations for a long-term continuation of the project have also been worked out.
