Background
The road between Caxito and N'Zeto plays a central role in the economic development of the region, particularly for the transport of agricultural products and access to markets. In order to reduce travel times and increase road safety, the road was to be modernised accordingly. The "Instituto Nacional de Estradas de Angola", or INEA for short, is responsible for transport planning in Angola.
Project
The project has a Class T7 pavement design according to the SATCC standard, and comprised the modernisation of the approximately 200 km long road between Caxito, the capital of the province of Bengo, and the coastal town of N'zeto in the province of Zaire. The route was upgraded to a two-lane carriageway with a continuous paved carriageway and a designed speed of up to 100 km/h. After completion of the construction work, the road was officially opened to traffic in February 2016.
The project was realised by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) on behalf of the Angolan government. GAUFF Engineering was commissioned with construction supervision and was responsible for quality assurance of the construction work, technical coordination and monitoring compliance with international standards, among other things.
As part of the project, 17 new bridges and 259 culverts were built or extensively renovated. The overall project had a volume of around 500 million dollars.
The modernised link makes an important contribution to economic integration and security of supply in northern Angola.
