Background
Merely ten percent of the around 56,000 kilometres of road in Angola are surfaced. As a result of the civil war
(1975 - 2002), almost all surfaced roads and around 75% of non-surfaced roads are damaged or can no longer be used, and around two thirds of all bridges were destroyed during that time. Travel remains difficult, especially trips inland. With the help of a comprehensive refurbishment and construction plan, Angola's government commissioned around 5,300 kilometres of road to be built between 2002 and the end of 2008. By 2011, this figure is to total 14,000 kilometres. The INEA, "Instituto Nacional de Estradas de Angola", is responsible for planning transport in Angola.
Project
The refurbishment of the road from Negage to 31 de Janeiro began four kilometres from the city of Negage.
The road leads through the cities Bungo and 31 de Janeiro, runs in north direction and after 117 kilometres,
in the south of the city of Damba, it ends in the National Road EN 140. The works included also the
construction of a new bridge with 65 metres length and the extension of a bridge with 17 meters length.
GAUFF Engineering assumed the supervision of all deliveries and services executed by the construction
firm „China Road and Bridge Corporation - CRBC" that was commissioned by Instituto de Estradas de Angola.
