Background
The state-owned power utility Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) is pursuing an ambitious programme to generate up to 1.2 GW of additional electricity from wind power. As part of this initiative, the International Finance Corporation ("IFC Advisory") was commissioned by the Ethiopian government to support the realisation of grid-connected wind power plants at two locations on a PPP basis.
Project
RINA Tech UK Limited was commissioned by the IFC to provide technical, environmental and social consulting services for the realisation of the Ethiopia Wind project. RINA Tech in turn commissioned GAUFF Engineering Power GmbH & Co. KG (GEP) to analyse in detail the suitability of the two planned sites for the grid-connected wind turbines with a capacity of 150 MW and 125 MW from various perspectives.
In order to use the given budget as effectively as possible, on-site investigations and desktop-based analyses were combined across all trades. The trade-specific results were compiled into a model using a geographic information system (GIS) and thus form a clear presentation of the technical risk assessment of the investigated sites.
The detailed studies for both locations were completed and handed over by GAUFF Engineering Power in June 2023.
