Background

With over 44 million passengers per year (2017), Munich Airport is one of the largest air traffic hubs in Europe. With the construction of a new gate at Terminal 1, Flughafen München GmbH (FMG) intends to establish additional handling positions for wide-bodied aircraft, expand the functionality of the terminal, increase the efficiency of passenger check-in and thereby further enhance its attractiveness. In order to realise this, an extension shall be constructed to the west and the west apron will be refurbished within the framework of a comprehensive construction project in the northern part of the existing Terminal 1. A particular challenge with this project is the maintenance of unrestricted flight and handling operations on the neighbouring apron areas.

Project

For the expansion of Terminal 1, it is intended that roughly 120,000 m2 of concrete and asphalt surfaces be demolished in the existing aircraft manoeuvring area on the west apron and that this be subsequently reconstructed with new ground surface contouring (shaping) of the apron, and that the associated infrastructure be aligned with the future requirements. Space will be established at the new building complex for optionally handling 6 wide-bodied aircraft Code E or F, or 12 aircraft Code C.

FMG has commissioned the joint venture GAUFF GmbH & Co. Engineering KG and act-consult AG (JV) with the general planning for the west apron.

The construction measures include demolition of the existing aircraft manoeuvring area and its reconstruction. It will be constructed with new ground surface contouring (shaping) of the apron, for the reorientation of the aircraft parking positions. Due to the reorganisation of the apron, the taxiway TWY C1 and the location of the taxiing guiding lines in the construction area will be adapted to the future taxiing situations. The existing infrastructure systems (incl. navigation lights, apron lights, docking systems, aviation fuel supply, power supply, rain, fuel and contaminated water drainage, drinking and extinguisher water supply, district heat and district cold supply) must be adapted to the new situation and connected with the facilities in the surrounding area. In preparation for the new apron or gate construction, it is necessary to implement demolition measures of buildings (including apron station with canteen, passenger boarding bridges, departure lounge A/B west and various boarding stations), surfaced areas and technical systems.

The construction measures will take place with the exclusion of the construction area from the security area of the airport. In order to connect the construction area it is necessary to implement extensive preparatory site traffic measures, including the installation of an access control point, the temporary relocation of the northern airport service road and its crossing with a temporary system bridge for direct connection of the construction site to the north ring. The seamless operation of the construction site and site traffic requires extensive site logistics planning, which must be coordinated with the corresponding technical divisions within the airport, in particular airport security.

The JV is working on this project together with hansaconsult Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH, Hamburg, as a specialist for aviation fuel supply systems, as well as Logistik und Management Beratungs GmbH from Berlin, as a construction logistics expert.

The realisation of the complete project will take place in parallel with the structural engineering for the new gate and with ongoing aviation operations on the neighbouring apron Areas.
