• SWW Wunsiedel – Rehabilitation of elevated tank Bibersbacher Str.

    Client: Stadtwerke Wunsiedel GmbH, SWW
    Project location: Wunsiedel, Germany
    Project term: 6 years
    Project start: November 2017

Contract:

Engineering services for project planning of engineering structures, technical equipment, on-site construction supervision for the modernisation of the elevated tank on Bibersbacher Str.

Background

The elevated tank on Bibersbacher Strasse, built in 1954, supplies the Wunsiedel lower zone and is a suction tank for onward conveyance to the HB Kappel elevated zone tank located higher up. Both its basic structure and the technical installations no longer met the current requirements for a drinking water supply system. The building structure and technical systems therefore needed to be rehabilitated, partially replaced and brought up to the state of the art.
The conversion of an outdated operating mode was also intended to save energy through pump operation that was no longer required.

Project

GAUFF Engineering was commissioned by the public utility company of Wunsiedel to provide the necessary engineering services.
The structure showed structural damage due to moisture, inadequate thermal insulation and inconsistent separation of the superstructure and the wet room (water chamber). Paint flaking, rust damage and defects in the wall coating had been identified in the water chambers.
This made it necessary to rehabilitate all three water chambers of the drinking water tank with concrete technology, which was carried out using a new cement-bound coating. A temporary supply was provided for the construction period.
The wet rooms (water chamber) and the superstructure were consistently separated from each other. The pipework installation, measurement technology and electrical system were completely renewed. The operating mode of the tank was also changed so that the feed pumps and pipework could be dimensioned smaller. The tank has been integrated into the SWW telecommunications system.
The superstructure was fitted with full thermal insulation as well as a new roof. A new ventilation system has been installed in the water chamber and the necessary pipework for the supply network has been connected in the area of the elevated tank.
