Background
With around 3.500 employees in Germany and abroad, the Zweites Deutsche Fernsehen (ZDF, Second German Television Channel) is one of the largest employers in the Rhine-Main region. The broadcasting center 1’s site is located on the “Lerchenberg”, around 7 kilometers away from down town Mainz and encompasses an area of approx. 940 m x 500 m (47,2 hectares).
The repeatedly occurring damages to the approx. 30 years old extinguishing water network of the broadcasting center 1 called for an urgent refurbishment.
Project
The workgroup GAUFF GmbH & Co. Engineering KG – Werner Hartwig GmbH was commissioned by ZDF with the performance of all necessary engineering services. A master plan for the refurbishment of the extinguishing water supply has been elaborated during the pre-planning phase. The execution planning has been finalized by the end of 2016 and based on it, the construction works were tendered and contracted at the beginning of the year 2017. In this context, the main distribution lines for extinguishing water and sprinklers were renewed in the supply ducts of the broadcasting center. The overall measures have been divided in two contract sections:
- Supply tunnel with lines for extinguishing water and sprinklers
- Lines for extinguishing water in the outside area
The site management and the local construction monitoring of the work group took place in close cooperation with the customer and the construction companies. Therefore, all set time and cost framework have been met in a reliable manner.
The new extinguishing water network of the outside area has a total length of 3,800 meters and has been designed as a ring line to ensure an optimized supply. The whole extinguishing water and sprinkler lines with an overall length of 2,140 meters were replaced in the existing supply duct.
The investigation and project planning of suitable construction workflow scenarios for the upholding of the secured supply of extinguishing water during construction works has been, next to the technical planning, a key task during the implementation of the engineering Services.
