Background
"Organisation pour la Mise en Valeur du Fleuve Gambie" (OMVG) is a cross-border organisation of the West African countries Senegal, Gambia, Guinea and Guinea Bissau that has been campaigning for the shared use of the natural resources provided by the Gambia river since the 1980s. Among other projects, it strives to generate power in a resource-efficient way with hydroelectric power plants, the continuity of which have been guaranteed in the context of a long-term energy development programme.
Project
GAUFF Engineering was commissioned by OMVG as a contractor to represent the Owner during the construction of the "Sambangalou" hydroelectric power plant, its high-voltage transmission network, and the corresponding infrastructure. This also involves connecting the Kaleta power plant in Guinea to the OMVG power distribution grid.
The Sambangalou power plant will be built 22km south of Kedougou, a city in Senegal, and will have an installed capacity of 128 MW. 1,677 km of 225 kV high-voltage power lines, 15 transformer stations and one central distribution hub to form a power network spanning all four OMVG countries are the main components of the infrastructure that will be used to distribute the generated power. GAUFF will also provide technical assistance when the Kaleta power plant, which has already been built in Guinea, is commissioned. This power plant is located about 120 kilometres north-east of the country's capital, Conakry, and has an installed capacity of 240 MW.
Sambangalou is expected to generate 394 GWh per year and Kaleta 946 GWh. This would cover 12.6% of the overall need predicted for the OMVG countries for 2018.
The project will be financed with 810 million euros from the African Development Bank and the World Bank, who will be co-financing it together with six other international financial institutions.
