Background
Cyclone Idai is one of the three most deadly tropical cyclones since weather records began. In March 2019, it caused major damage in Mozambique, Madagascar, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Several million people were affected by the consequences. The city of Beira in Mozambique and the surrounding region were hit particularly hard. The combined effects of floods and storms claimed hundreds of lives and left thousands seriously injured. According to estimates, 111,163 houses were destroyed, another 112,735 were damaged and about 15,784 buildings were under water. The estimated damage caused to the infrastructure is over USD 1 billion.
In the framework of an agreement for emergency aid between the Federal Republic of Germany and Mozambique, various reconstruction measures have been launched.
Project
The aim of this project is to rebuild and rehabilitate nine market places and various water supply systems in the provinces of Sofala and Manica. The new and renovated structures have been enhanced in the planning in a way that future storms or floods can no longer have such a disastrous effect on them. On behalf of DNDA (Direccao Nacional do Desenvolvimento Autarquico) and KfW (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau), GAUFF Engineering is leading the project from planning to final acceptance. In addition, employees of the municipalities are trained by GAUFF Engineering after completion in order to maintain the buildings in the long term.
