Contract:

Design review, support with the tendering process and construction supervision for rural road construction works in Zambézia Province, Mozambique

Background

The project forms part of the ‘11th EDF – Rural Development Through Improved Rural Transport in Mozambique’ programme and aims to bring about a sustainable improvement in rural transport infrastructure in the provinces of Nampula (1 Lot) and Zambézia (2 Lotes). The modernisation and repair of strategically important roads will ensure year-round accessibility to rural regions and promote their economic and social development. In addition, the project includes improvements to border infrastructure and accompanying measures to strengthen local communities, including the construction and modernisation of marketplaces, schools and wells.

Project

The project involves the design review, tendering assistance and construction supervision of various roadworks in Zambézia Province. The project is divided in 2 Lotes. The Lot 2 encompasses the road sections of Gurue-Nampevo and Lioma-Mutuali. The Lot 3 encompasses the road sections of Milange-Milange Airfiled, Milange-Zalimba, Zalimba to Majaua, Milange-Corromane, and Coromane to Molumbo. This includes the upgrading of a total of 90 km of unsealed roads to asphalted roads in accordance with the LVSR (Low-Volume Sealed Roads) standard, the periodic repair of around 121 km of existing asphalt roads, and the maintenance and selective improvement of 172 km of gravel roads. The construction works include, amongst other things, the renewal of drainage systems/line drains, road resurfacing, repairs to the road superstructure, and measures to improve road safety and the durability of the infrastructure.

Accompanying infrastructure measures for the local population, for example at eleven STOPlaces/markets, ten schools and water supply facilities (boreholes), further contribute to the sustainable development of the region.

Furthermore we provide knowledge transfer to the local Project Implementation Unit (PIU) where we train four trainees every half year.
