• Electrification of 300 villages with photovoltaic systems

Client: Agence Sénégalaise d’Électrification Rurale (ASER)
    Project location: Senegal
    Project term: 48 months
    Project start: July 2019

General contractor for the Agence Sénégalaise d'Electrification Rurale (ASER) for the electrification of 300 villages with 15 - 45 kWp PV systems and mini-grids.

The Senegalese state aims for full access to electricity for all its citizens by 2025. The vast majority of this electricity is to be generated from renewable energies. For rural areas in Senegal in particular, electrification is an important step towards sustainable and environmentally friendly economic and social development.

Within the scope of an EPPM contract (Engineering, Procurement, Project Management), GAUFF Engineering plans and implements a self-sufficient, decentralised solar power supply as a general contractor for ASER for 300 villages in Senegal. This power supply consists of the following main components:

  • One PV system of 15 to 45 kWp with battery storage per village
  • Distribution networks comprising a total of about 840 km of LV lines, 25,000 poles and 3,600 LED lanterns for street lighting
  • 24,000 domestic connections, including five sockets and five LED bulbs in each connected household
  • other equipment for the productive use of energy, such as refrigerators, water pumps and grain mills

In order to realise this, a number of private and public, German and Senegalese actors were united. As a first step, preliminary studies were carried out to determine the exact energy requirements for each village. The planning for the project execution and logistics was developed on this basis. The proper installation work then runs simultaneously in several villages in order to keep up to the ambitious time schedule. An important part of the project is an educational program in which local workers are trained for the installation, operation and maintenance of the plants. This important development project with a volume of 120 million euros is financed by KfW IPEX-Bank, a wholly owned subsidiary of KfW. The Federal Government supports the project with supplier and buyer credit cover
