Background
The Khafsa water treatment plant is part of the Aleppo water supply system, one of the largest drinking water systems in Syria, to which more than three million people are currently connected. Raw water from Al Forat Lake, 77 km east of the city of Aleppo, is treated here and pumped through four canals to sterilization stations in Aleppo. The plant is operated by the Aleppo Water Board (WBA), which reports to the Ministry of Water Resources (MoWR). The plant was in urgent need of rehabilitation and had a high loss rate.
Project
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Switzerland had commissioned GAUFF Engineering to rehabilitate the water treatment plant in Khafsa. The contract included the preparation of a diagnosis of the water treatment plant and a concept for the rehabilitation works, including a subdivision of the works and their prioritisation based on a risk analysis regarding components and processes. The rehabilitation optimised water production and ensured the sustainability of the Khafsa water treatment plant.
