Framework contract for technical assistance to the ICRC in Iraq - First measures in Mosul successfully completed

In October 2022, GAUFF Engineering signed a framework contract with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for technical assistance in the implementation of water supply projects in Iraq. In detail, GAUFF Engineering is responsible for the special field of "Hydraulics & Water Management".

A first measure of the two-year framework contract was successfully completed in April 2023 after six months. The task was to provide technical support to the "ICRC Water & Habitat Unit" in the implementation of the project "Al-Obur Water Access and Service Improvements."

Al-Obur is one of the most economically underdeveloped districts on the western outskirts of Mosul. Nevertheless, it has seen a massive increase in population since 2014, as more and more displaced people from rural areas seek refuge here. From about 700 households in 2013, the population grew by 450 per cent to about 3,170 households with about 23,000 people by the end of 2022.

The following measures were implemented in the course of the ICRC project:

  • Installation of intelligent pumping stations in the "Rajamhadeed" pressure boosting plant.
  • Rehabilitation of the water distribution network
  • Flow measurements at strategic locations
  • Installation of pressure boosting plants

GAUFF Engineering supported the ICRC during the implementation of the measures in the following areas

  • reviewing the planning and tender documents as well as on-site supervision of construction;
  • ensuring conformity with relevant norms and standards (quality assurance); and
  • local supervision of construction
  • preparing technical specifications and typical drawings for civil, electrical and mechanical works that will be used as standard specifications in Ninewa district.

The ICRC has been working without interruption in Iraq since 1980, taking care of the humanitarian consequences of armed conflicts, whereby the program for the reconstruction and development of the drinking water supply in Mosul was launched in September 2017.
