Munich Airport Vorfeld West – Submission of the Design Planning

Flughafen München GmbH (FMG) commissioned the consortium GAUFF GmbH & Co. Engineering KG and act-consult AG (Consortium Lead Design MUC Vorfeld West) for the lead design of the civil engineering on the manoeuvring area west (Vorfeld West). For the upcoming expansion of Terminal 1 some 120,000 m2 of concrete and asphalt surfaces need to be removed in the area of the current flight operation areas on Vorfeld West; subsequently new ground surface development as well as the corresponding infrastructure in accordance with the future requirements need to be installed. Currently, the consortium is working on the design planning.

With more than 42 million passengers per year (2016) Munich Airport is one of the biggest air travel hubs in Europe. By building a new gate on Terminal 1, FMG is aiming to create new check-in options for jumbo jets, expand the functionality of the terminal and further increase the efficiency of passenger check-in, thus making the airport more attractive. In order to achieve this, an expansion westward will be added to the northern part of the existing Terminal 1, and the Vorfeld West will be redone within a comprehensive building project.

The implementation of the complete civil engineering project is partially done parallel to the structural engineering measures for the new gate, and all of this during ongoing flight operations. In early 2018, first preliminary measures shall be implemented. Start of the construction work for the main building measure is planned for June 2018. A particular challenge in this project, besides the complex adjustments of the new ground surface development and infrastructure, is maintaining the unrestricted flight and check-in operations in the neighbouring areas during the complete building project.
