• Drinking Water Supply Baghdad

Client: General Contractor for Water and Sewage (GCWS) Baghdad
    Project location: Baghdad, Iraq
    Project term: 6 years
    Project start: 1995

Contract:

Procurement and Delivery of PVC Pressure Pipes in the Frame of the Humanitarian Aid of the United Nations "Oli-for-Food"-Programme

Background

Due to the second gulf war (1991) water supply in Iraq degraded considerably. Main reason was the permanent decreasing efficiency of the existing plants (lack of qualified personnel, insufficient maintenance), which resulted in a decreasing provision of people with clean drinking water. The necessity to satisfy their need of water from “unsafe sources”, resulted in an enormous increase of infectious diseases and epidemics.

Project

The goal of the project was to promote the restoration and expansion of the pipe network in the respective regions in order to improve the supply of drinking water to the population. More than a thousand tonnes of PVC pressure pipes, including the necessary accessories, were delivered to Iraq for this purpose – enough to lay a 270 kilometre long pipe system.
